Garrison Pool - end of an era!
The old Garrison pool closed on 27th May for the very last time. With many of the masters swimmers having swum here for more years than they care to admit to - at least one for 48 years - and the pool closing straight after our session, it was an emotional occasion.

The last session begins

We had grown used to its dilapidated state - the last repairs were carried out circa 1987 - and it could well be the last 33 1/3 yard pool in the country. The water was always cold in the winter and far too hot for training in the summer. The showers dispensed the barest minimum of water and again the temperature was seasonal; the ice would block the drains in winter and there was a danger of scalding in the summer. And, of course, it had to close with suspiciously high frequency, due to what was euphemistically called "chemical imbalance". But we loved it all the same and it will be missed. So all that remained was to take a photo for posterity and go out with a splash....
